Sage’s Fave Five: New Year Superstitions

Here are the top superstitions I grew up with.

 photo from:

5. Jumping 12 times when the clock strikes midnight – I was made to believe that you’d grow taller when you jump every January 1st

4. Eating glutinous / sticky rice – Okay, does puto count?  The idea is to have a close-knit relationship with the family

3. Having 12 round fruits on the table – Round signifies prosperity. And then hanging grapes at the door for wealth

2. Wearing polka – Dots represent affluence and keeping round coins inside your pocket

1.   Welcoming the new year with a bang – Make some noise everyone. It’s about gaiety and being happy with high hopes for the coming year.
