Movie Review: Pacific Rim

Rating: 4.5 / 5 popcorn
Directed by Guillermo del Toro

The world is coming to an end when sea monsters known as Kaiju started to proliferate.  Robots called Jaegers, controlled by two pilots whose minds are bonded by a neural bridge, are made to put an end to this.

The movie is a refreshing take on the current trend of creating book-into-film or of sequels. The plot may come too predictable alright but the execution will leave curious minds wondering. For me, there were some gray areas as to story development but pacing is fine as to introducing the characters, presenting conflict and then coming up with a resolution. Mecha fanatics will find a resemblance to Evangelion though.

You can easily relate with the characters. From people with angsty personality, to those who want to avenge their family and then those who simply want to put an end to hostility. It's also about relationships with a parent, a sibling, a mentor or a friend.

Why does it have to be in Hong Kong? Ok, I'm checking the map...

The movie is nothing short of effects but why does it have to be at night when monsters come and the action has to take place? Some say it's for drama while I say it's because the film needs to be rendered in 3D thus the dark feel to it. I expected choppers to come out of the screen but the 3D effect has not been utilized well. Overall, you have to catch your breath for action-packed scenes.

What do you think?
