Powerhouse 2: Erik Santos Sings the Greatest OPM Classics

I am not an avid supporter of Erik Santos (ok, don't go hating on just yet) but after watching the concert, I am now a convert. He has, somehow, earned my respect with the performance he did at the Solaire Theatre last April 7. And did I say he directed it too? The show dubbed as "Powerhouse 2: Erik Santos Sings the Greatest OPM Classics", truly showcased an all Pinoy music playlist with, well, an all powerhouse cast.

Opening the show were It's Showtime Tawag ng Tanghalan Grand Finalists Eumee Capile and Mary Gidget Dela Llana who presented two songs each. It also featured Marcelito Pomoy (Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 winner) who's known for his split renditions of male-female duets.

Shortly after a fifteen-minute break, everyone was in for quite a grand entrance by Erik Santos who suddenly popped out of the stage and then went down to mingle with the audience while rendering something reminiscent of the 70s-80s Manila sound.

Spotlight to the orchestra where you could see people enjoying and dancing to the tunes being played.

Surprise guests, namely Bugoy Drilon and Jovit Baldovino, followed which made my mom screamed and jumped (definitely an exaggeration) out of sheer happiness. The two, together with Erik, form part of what is called "Tres Kantos" where the latter serves as a mentor to the group.

The mood changed when yet another unexpected artist graced the event. At this point, more solemn and endearing, more likely to be a punch in the heart songs were performed back-to-back with spoken word / poetry by none other than Juan Miguel Severo (famous for his piece "Ang Huling Tula na Isusulat Ko para sa 'Yo").

On to the next segment with Yeng Constantino (Pinoy Dream Academy winner) which picked up the ambience from a downcast feeling to a more positive vibe. She performed solo with some of her hits and then some duets with Erik.

The happy atmosphere continued with another special guest, singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid who delivered catchy melodies and amusing punchlines here and there.

I thought it would end the show but Erik still performed quite a number of songs. I overheard someone asking, "where does he get all this energy from"? I think it's because of his solid fan base who exudes the same amount of energy. Capping off the night, as people shouting for more, was him doing an encore. Singing "This is the Moment" (forgive that this is not an OPM), but as his winning piece at a singing competition, Erik Santos definitely ended it in a style that only a champion could do.

A meet-and-greet, autograph signing was held after for those who purchased his album.

A talented singer, and down-to-earth person, I was ecstatic that I was able to watch it - hoping for a repeat.

Noted celebrities who attended the concert include Gabby Concepcion, Jimmy Santos, Jolina Magdangal and Jed Madela to name a few. The whole show ran from 8:30-11:00 pm, that plus the designs, sounds and segments made it all worth the price we paid for.
